Unsurprisingly, given the Randy Marsh I thought this was America 2020 shirt and I love this project’s thoughtful approach to fundraising, Nguyen and her collaborators are keen to maintain their focus on the bigger picture—most notably in their emphasis on looking to a future beyond the election result. “During the first call, I mentioned that this is not going to just be about the election fundraising,” Nguyen says firmly. “We are going to keep the conversation going to talk about systemic racism, and also how those systemic issues exist within the textile world. That goes back to the cotton industry during slavery in the U.S., but also the cotton industry in China today in relation to the forced labor of the Uighur people. There’s a lot in textiles that we need to work on in regards to racism.”

The hope is that the Randy Marsh I thought this was America 2020 shirt and I love this connections made as a result of the Textile Artists Fundraiser can serve as a springboard for those working within the community to help each other longer-term, whether through mutual support or mentorship. “By doing this, we are creating a community for textile artists to come together and learn from each other,” Nguyen concludes. “There are so many different outcomes that I’m hoping to see from this project, but most importantly, it’s an opportunity for everyone to grow.”
