“I was trying to figure out ways to donate to the Just a Woman who loves Snoopy and Halloween shirt it is in the first place but 2020 election without it just going to one candidate, and finding a way of offering long-term investment in communities,” Nguyen explains. “I don’t think it is our place to ever tell communities outside of ours what’s best for them, so it’s about raising money for these grassroots organizations to determine how best to invest in their community’s future.” Undeterred by the challenges of bringing this vision of fundraising to life, Nguyen and three friends—printmaker Jen Hewett, tapestry weaver Erin M. Riley, and knitter Betty Farrell—began a series of conversations with the Movement Voter Project, a group that offers streamlined fundraising support to help donors connect with community-based organizations in battleground states, with a particular focus on youth programs and communities of color.

“We knew we needed to do it really quickly, so the Just a Woman who loves Snoopy and Halloween shirt it is in the first place but money can get to those grassroots organizations before November,” Nguyen adds. “So instead of doing one big website or one auction, we just gave the artists the tools to promote their work online and to do auctions online.” The first step was to set up a group Zoom call with 100 fellow artists, after which they begin posting works under the Instagram hashtag #Textiles4MVP. Interest in the project quickly snowballed: Since launching on September 3, the team has already raised over $20,000 for the 42 local groups they are supporting, which include Black Voters Matter, Mijente, and Mothering Justice.
